BREAKING NEWS: Assembly Education Committee Approves Senator Janet Nguyen’s SB 895

(Garden Grove, CA) On Wednesday afternoon, Senator Janet Nguyen’s Senate Bill 895 (SB 895) cleared yet another hurdle on its historic path to become law when it was unanimously approved by the members of the Assembly Education Committee. Following this approval, SB 895 will move on to the next stage of the legislative approval process and will be considered by the members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Before casting their vote, the seven members of the Assembly Education Committee heard directly from Senator Nguyen, who presented compelling testimony outlining the educational merits of the bill and the historical importance of including the first-person accounts of refugees. To demonstrate the interest of the community for this bill, Senator Nguyen also presented more than 14,500 signatures of support that were gathered via an online and in person petition.

Joining Senator Nguyen were Assemblymembers Sharon Quirk-Silva and Ash Kalra who provided testimony in support of SB 895. Moved by the testimony presented, the Chair of the Assembly Committee Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell asked on the dias to be a co-author.
