On February 23, 2017 Senators in Sacramento tried to silence Senator Janet Nguyen as she tried to deliver an adjournment to honor the Vietnamese refugees, Vietnamese people, and Veterans of the Vietnam War who have fought for freedom and democracy. In addition, she spoke against former Senator Tom Hayden’s agenda to strongly support, promote and aid the North Vietnamese Communists during the Vietnam war. Senator Nguyen was not only silenced when her desk mic was turned off but was then forcibly removed from the Senate Floor for an improper reason when the Senate cited a rule that does not exist.

After trying to make a statement about the late Tom Hayden and his opposition to the Vietnam War, Sen. Janet Nguyen was removed from the floor of the state Senate on Thursday, a tense scene that ended in a slew of angry accusations from both Republicans and Democrats.

Nguyen, who was brought to the United States as a Vietnamese refugee when she was a child, said she wanted to offer “a different historical perspective” on what Hayden and his opposition to the war had meant to her and other refugees.

A group of Vietnamese constituents of Sen. Janet Nguyen, protested at the Capitol on Monday March 6, 2017 to support her after Senate Democrats removed her from the Senate on Feb. 23, 2017 for speaking against the late Sen. Tom Hayden.

“I demand that the Pro Tem of the Senate, on behalf of the Majority Party of the Senate, officially apologize on the Senate Floor to Senator Janet Nguyen, Vietnam Veterans and the Vietnamese American Community for silencing our First Amendment rights on February 23, 2017. Senator Nguyen's microphone was silenced and she was forcefully removed from the Senate floor while she was speaking on behalf of her family and constituents. This is simply not right.”
